Concrete carbonation occurs when the pH of concrete, typically around 11-11.5, drops below 10, compromising the thin passivation layer on the steel reinforcement and enabling corrosion. We conduct carbonation testing with a chemical indicator that, if failing to turn pink, signals a loss of alkalinity.

This inspection determines whether chloride ions have penetrated the concrete to the level of the reinforcement, as this can accelerate corrosion risks within the structure.

Using “covermeters,” we perform non-invasive measurements of concrete cover over steel reinforcement. These surveys also help locate primary and secondary reinforcement, assess bar sizes and spacing, and gauge minimum cover and variability across structural elements.

Our ferroscan device enables detailed analysis of reinforcement positioning, concrete cover depth, and indicative bar diameter, allowing for efficient scanning of extensive concrete areas.

This technique provides a quick, cost-effective, and non-destructive way to detect corrosion in reinforced concrete. We frequently apply this method on bridge decks, balconies, and structures exposed to marine environments.

Following chloride profile testing, often conducted alongside visual, carbonation, and cover depth surveys, we assess identified chloride ion concentrations to gauge the structural concrete's condition and its potential performance over time.

HAC, though no longer used in structural concrete in the UK, can still be found in older constructions. HAC undergoes mineralogical "conversion" in certain climates, compromising its strength and chemical resistance. If HAC is suspected, we test for its presence; confirmed cases lead to further assessments of strength and durability.

Cement content is critical for durability, permeability, and strength. Insufficient cement can lead to rapid carbonation and structural inadequacy, while excess cement may result in thermal cracking, shrinkage, and alkali-silica reaction risk. These tests are essential when integrating new concrete into a structure.

This detailed analysis identifies key features such as cement hydration, microcracking, carbonation depth, fire damage, aggregate breakdown, and freeze-thaw resilience.

This test measures a concrete sample’s ability to withstand compressive forces, where force is applied on both faces until the sample reaches its maximum load capacity without failure.

Used to assess the bond strength between a repair overlay and the substrate, as well as the in-place tensile strength of concrete or other materials, providing insight into overlay adhesion and material durability.

By applying force to a concrete sample, we measure its response to stress, helping to determine its tensile properties, strength, and elongation capacity.

Mundic deterioration, caused by the decomposition of mineral constituents, is assessed through multi-stage analysis. Core samples drilled from the concrete surface are analysed off-site to identify the presence and extent of mundic-related damage.
